About

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers and devices that enables the exchange of data, communication, and services across vast distances. In robotics and AI, the Internet serves as critical infrastructure for connecting robots, sensors, and intelligent systems to cloud computing resources, remote databases, and other machines — enabling capabilities that would be impossible with onboard hardware alone. Robots leverage Internet connectivity to offload computationally intensive tasks to remote servers, receive real-time updates, participate in distributed control architectures, and collaborate within larger cyber-physical systems. Applications range from teleoperated surgical robots and autonomous agricultural systems to smart manufacturing under Industry 4.0 frameworks and Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. Emerging extensions such as 5G, edge computing, and the Tactile Internet are pushing connectivity to lower latencies and higher bandwidths, making time-sensitive robotic applications increasingly viable. Understanding the Internet matters for roboticists and AI engineers because modern intelligent systems are rarely isolated — their performance, safety, and scalability fundamentally depend on reliable, secure, and efficient network communication.
