A probability model is a mathematical framework that represents uncertainty by assigning numerical likelihoods to possible outcomes or events. In robotics and AI, probability models are used to reason about uncertain environments, sensor noise, system behavior, and decision-making processes. Rather than treating outcomes as deterministic, these models capture the range of possibilities and their relative chances of occurring, enabling systems to make informed decisions even with incomplete information. In robotic swarms, for example, probability models govern individual agent behavior by introducing stochastic response rules, where robots act based on computed probabilities rather than rigid thresholds. This approach enhances robustness by preventing synchronized failures and reducing sensitivity to noise or environmental variability. More broadly, probability models underpin core AI techniques such as Bayesian inference, Markov decision processes, particle filters, and reinforcement learning. Their importance lies in bridging the gap between idealized assumptions and real-world complexity — allowing robots and AI systems to function reliably despite inherent unpredictability in sensing, actuation, and environment.
