Performance measurement refers to the systematic process of defining, quantifying, and evaluating how well a system, process, or agent achieves its intended objectives. In robotics and AI, performance measurement encompasses a broad range of metrics tailored to specific applications — from kinematic manipulability indices that assess a robot arm's dexterity and control efficiency, to throughput and accuracy metrics for automated warehouse systems, to domain-specific indicators tracking AI's impact in industrial settings like oil and gas exploration. These metrics may capture short-term operational outcomes or long-term strategic value, and they often must evolve as technologies and work environments change. Effective performance measurement matters because it provides engineers and managers with objective, comparable evidence to guide design decisions, justify investments, optimize operations, and identify failure modes early. Without rigorous measurement frameworks, it becomes difficult to benchmark progress, validate improvements, or communicate system capabilities to stakeholders — making performance measurement a foundational discipline underlying virtually all engineering development and deployment efforts.
