About

Anastomosis refers to the surgical technique of joining two hollow structures — such as blood vessels, bowel segments, or urinary tract components — to restore or reconstruct functional continuity after resection or injury. In robotic and minimally invasive surgery, anastomosis represents one of the most technically demanding steps, requiring precise suturing or stapling within confined anatomical spaces. Robotic surgical systems like the da Vinci platform have significantly advanced anastomotic techniques by providing enhanced dexterity, tremor filtration, and magnified three-dimensional visualization, enabling surgeons to perform complex joins — such as urethrovesical, ureterovesical, intestinal, and coronary artery anastomoses — through small incisions with accuracy comparable to open surgery. Emerging research is pushing further toward autonomous robotic anastomosis, where AI-guided systems perform the suturing independently. Anastomotic quality matters enormously because failures, such as leaks or strictures, cause serious postoperative complications including infection, fistula formation, and mortality. Mastering anastomosis in robotic surgery is therefore central to improving patient outcomes across urology, colorectal surgery, cardiac surgery, and transplantation.
