About

Yiheng Song is a rising innovator in soft robotics and smart materials, whose work centers on developing advanced actuators and flexible electronics with unprecedented environmental resilience. Song’s most impactful contribution is the creation of an antifreezing ionotronic skin based on flexible, transparent, and tunable ionic conductive nanocellulose hydrogels (2021, 24 citations), a breakthrough that enables wearable sensors to function in subzero conditions without compromising conductivity or transparency. This foundational work has opened new pathways for durable, bio-inspired electronics. Building on this, Song has pioneered dual-mode driven Marangoni actuators (2025, 10 citations) that combine spontaneity with precise controllability, allowing soft robots to navigate complex fluid interfaces—a critical advance for autonomous systems in biomedical and environmental applications. Additionally, Song’s research on shape-regulated motion and energy conversion in polyelectrolyte membrane actuators (2024, 8 citations) has revealed how ethanol-containing actuators can achieve controlled movement and energy harvesting at fluid boundaries, addressing a longstanding challenge in soft robotics. By integrating nanocellulose-based materials with dynamic actuation mechanisms, Song is shaping the future of adaptive, multifunctional soft machines.
