About

Yanbei Hou is a pioneering researcher at the forefront of smart materials and soft robotics, with a primary focus on liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and 4D printing technologies. Her groundbreaking work has fundamentally advanced the creation of reprogrammable, stimuli-responsive materials that can change shape and function on demand. In her highly cited 2023 study (68 citations), Hou introduced a novel 4D printing approach for LCEs that synergistically combines photochromism and photoactuation, overcoming the traditional limitation of fixed shape morphing and enabling dynamic, reprogrammable actuation—a critical step for next-generation soft robotics. More recently, in 2024, she developed the first-ever flame-actuated soft actuator, a multilayer LCE/hydrogel composite that harnesses fire as an abundant and accessible external stimulus, opening new possibilities for applications in fire safety and extreme environments. Hou’s innovative contributions not only push the boundaries of material science but also demonstrate remarkable practical impact, positioning her as a leading voice in the design of intelligent, adaptive systems. Her work continues to inspire students and researchers exploring the intersection of chemistry, mechanics, and robotics.
