About
Ilaria Orsi is a pioneering surgical researcher advancing the frontier of radioguided surgery, with a focus on integrating molecular imaging into robotic-assisted procedures. Her primary research areas include intraoperative nuclear medicine, signal processing for surgical navigation, and the clinical translation of novel detection devices. Orsi’s major contribution is the first-in-human validation of the DROP-IN β-probe, a miniature detector designed for robotic radioguided surgery. In her landmark 2024 study, she defined the optimal signal-to-background discrimination algorithm for this probe, enabling surgeons to precisely localize tracer-avid lesions—such as those targeted by receptor-specific radiopharmaceuticals—during minimally invasive operations. This work, already cited 14 times, addresses a critical need in the shift toward molecularly targeted surgery, where traditional gamma probes fall short. By bridging engineering and clinical practice, Orsi has established a new standard for intraoperative decision-making. Her achievements mark a significant step in making robotic surgery more accurate and personalized, promising to improve outcomes for patients with cancer and other tracer-avid diseases.
