About
HH Asada is a pioneering roboticist whose research focuses on the design and control of specialized underwater robots for inspection and maintenance of complex, hazardous structures. His major contributions lie in developing novel, compact, and tetherless Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) that can perform in-contact inspection of challenging environments, such as ship hulls and the internals of boiling water reactors. Asada’s work is distinguished by its innovative use of bio-inspired principles, including hydrodynamic ground effect, to achieve self-stabilization and efficient locomotion during subsurface inspection. His most cited paper, "Control of a compact, tetherless ROV for in-contact inspection of complex underwater structures" (2014, 9 citations), introduces the dynamic modeling and control of the EVIE (Ellipsoidal Vehicle for Inspection and Exploration) robot. A subsequent paper, "A self stabilizing underwater sub-surface inspection robot using hydrodynamic ground effect" (2015, 6 citations), further refines this concept, demonstrating a unique self-stabilizing ellipsoidal robot that leverages ground effect for stable, subsurface inspection. Asada’s work is notable for its direct application to critical infrastructure safety, pushing the boundaries of what autonomous underwater vehicles can achieve in confined, high-risk environments.
