About
Francesc Rocadenbosch is a leading figure in atmospheric remote sensing, with his work centered on the development of advanced lidar and radiometer inversion techniques for aerosol profiling. He is best known as the principal architect of the LIdar-Radiometer Inversion Code (LIRIC), a seminal algorithm that synergizes ground-based lidar and sun-photometric data to retrieve vertical profiles of aerosol concentration. This foundational work, detailed in his most cited paper (139 citations), has been widely adopted within the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET), cementing his impact on the field. Rocadenbosch has also made critical contributions to the study of extreme dust events, such as the unprecedented February 2017 Saharan dust intrusion over the Iberian Peninsula, where he integrated lidar monitoring with forecast model evaluation (99 citations). His research extends to the intercontinental transport of wildfire smoke, combining ground/space-based remote sensing with particle dispersion modeling (95 citations). Through these efforts, Rocadenbosch has advanced our understanding of aerosol optical properties, including the lidar ratio climatology, and has provided essential tools and data for improving atmospheric models and air quality assessments.
