About

Debasis Mitra’s research career bridges two distinct but equally impactful domains: the control of flexible robot arms and qualitative spatial reasoning. In the mid-1980s, Mitra tackled a core challenge in robotics—how to make lightweight, flexible manipulators both fast and precise. His pioneering work on load-adaptive optimal control and end-point sensing, published in 1985 and 1986, introduced methods that allowed robot arms to compensate for structural flexibility in real time. These contributions, which have accumulated over 40 citations, laid early groundwork for modern lightweight and compliant robotic systems. Two decades later, Mitra shifted focus to artificial intelligence and spatial cognition. His 2002 paper on qualitative reasoning with arbitrary angular directions (11 citations) proposed a generalized framework for agents—robots, rescue workers, or autonomous vehicles—to reason about relative directions using parameterized angular zones. This work has influenced research in qualitative spatial reasoning and autonomous navigation.
