David Sofield is a prominent urological surgeon whose research focuses on the intersection of minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly in the management of prostate cancer. His work critically examines how prior surgical interventions, such as laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR), can complicate subsequent radical prostatectomy. In his highly cited 2014 study (15 citations), Sofield was among the first to systematically document the clinical challenges posed by mesh from LIHR, which can obliterate tissue planes and compromise both the prostatectomy and necessary nodal dissections. This research has had a significant impact on preoperative planning and surgical decision-making for urologists. Additionally, Sofield contributed to a landmark analysis of the Australian laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) experience (2016, 12 citations), evaluating outcomes from 2,943 cases performed by nine high-volume, fellowship-trained surgeons. This work provided critical, real-world data on the safety and efficacy of non-robotic laparoscopic approaches, helping to define best practices in the field. Through these contributions, Sofield has advanced the understanding of surgical complexities and outcomes in prostate cancer care.
