Abstract
Robots have the potential to enhance human life in many ways, but also add new risks and set off complex changes in society. In this chapter some of the ethical considerations in the design and construction of robotics are presented, and theories and tools are offered for designing ethically informed robotic systems. These approaches help engineers and designers to translate more abstract ethical considerations into specifications and design requirements. The chapter explains how interdisciplinary collaboration, a holistic perspective, and the ethically-informed design of robotic systems gives us the best chance to perform responsible research and innovation – and ultimately enhance human flourishing.
