Abstract
Bioprinting technology has the potential to be used in synthetic biology for the reproducible and precise production of scaffolds, cells, tissues, and organs. Based on their basic printing principles, bioprinting technologies are broadly classified into three categories: inkjet-based bioprinting, pressure-assisted bioprinting, and laser-assisted bioprinting. Each of these printing processes has advantages and disadvantages. Bioprinting makes use of biomaterials, cells, or cell factors as "bioink" to create potential tissue architectures. The printed result is heavily influenced by biomaterial factors such as biocompatibility, cell viability, and the cellular microenvironment. Various printing technologies have been researched, with significant progress made in printing various types of tissue such as vasculature, heart, bone, cartilage, skin, and liver. This overview explains the fundamental concepts and major features of certain commonly used printing technologies. We concentrate on recent developments in three-dimensional printing applications, as well as present issues and future directions. Also a case study will be discussed at the end of the chapter which will be very useful for the researchers working in the same field.
