A navigation system is a framework of sensors, algorithms, and control mechanisms that enables a robot or autonomous vehicle to determine its position, plan a path, and move safely through an environment to reach a goal. These systems integrate diverse technologies — including GPS, cameras, lidar, inertial measurement units, and RFID — often fused together to overcome the limitations of any single sensing modality. In robotics and AI, navigation systems underpin a wide range of applications, from warehouse logistics robots and autonomous ground vehicles to aerial drones, underwater vehicles, agricultural machines, and assistive wheelchairs. Modern approaches increasingly leverage deep reinforcement learning, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and computer vision to enable robust operation in unstructured or GPS-denied environments. Beyond mobile robotics, navigation principles have been adapted for computer-assisted surgical systems, guiding instruments with millimeter precision during orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures. Navigation systems are foundational to robot autonomy because, without reliable localization and path execution, no robot can reliably interact with the physical world across sustained, real-world deployments.
