About
A biointerface is the engineered boundary where biological systems — such as cells, tissues, or neural networks — make functional contact with artificial materials, devices, or electronic systems. In robotics and AI, biointerfaces serve as the critical link enabling machines to sense, communicate with, and respond to living organisms. They are constructed using advanced materials like MXenes, two-dimensional nanomaterials, and patterned proteins that can be precisely engineered at the micro- and nanoscale to match the mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties of biological tissue. Applications range from flexible biosensors and bioelectronics that monitor physiological signals, to neural probes that allow brain-machine communication, to trainable nanoscale systems that mimic biological memory and adaptation. Biointerfaces matter because poor compatibility between rigid electronics and soft biological tissue has historically limited implantable devices and human-robot interaction. By designing materials that are mechanically compliant, chemically stable, and electrically conductive, biointerfaces enable safer, more responsive, and longer-lasting integration between biological organisms and robotic or AI-driven systems.
