About

Yu Okabe is a urological surgeon and researcher whose work centers on improving functional outcomes after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). His primary research areas include nerve-sparing surgical techniques, intraoperative patient positioning, and the use of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence to preserve cavernous nerves and optimize both erectile function and lower urinary tract function. Okabe’s most cited paper (22 citations) presents a comprehensive nerve-sparing approach for preserving erectile function in the robotic surgery era, a technique considered critical for postoperative genitourinary health. He also demonstrated through propensity score-matched analysis that the “opened legs” position significantly reduces the risk of postoperative rhabdomyolysis, enhancing the safety of RARP. More recently, his work on ICG fluorescence-assisted nerve-sparing RARP (3 citations) shows promise in objectively improving lower urinary tract symptoms. Additionally, Okabe has explored the genetic basis of lower urinary tract function, investigating β3-adrenoceptor gene polymorphisms. His contributions are directly shaping safer, more functional outcomes for prostate cancer patients undergoing robotic surgery.
