About
Xiaomin Ye is a leading figure in satellite ocean color remote sensing, with a primary focus on advancing the retrieval of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations—a key indicator of marine phytoplankton biomass and ocean health. Dr. Ye’s major contributions center on the calibration and application of data from the Chinese Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (COCTS) onboard the HY-1C satellite. In a foundational 2020 study (33 citations), Ye and colleagues performed the first global evaluation of COCTS-derived Chl-a, establishing a critical baseline for this new sensor. Building on this, Dr. Ye pioneered the use of deep learning for ocean optics, developing a novel Residual Network (ResNet) model in a 2023 study (11 citations) that significantly improved the accuracy of Chl-a retrievals from complex global ocean waters. This work represents a notable achievement in applying artificial intelligence to overcome the limitations of traditional bio-optical algorithms. By bridging satellite engineering with advanced computational methods, Xiaomin Ye’s research is instrumental in enhancing China’s autonomous ocean monitoring capabilities, providing vital data for studying marine ecosystems, climate change, and global biogeochemical cycles.
