About

Wei Xiong is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose research focuses on advancing surgical techniques for genitourinary cancers, particularly penile cancer. His landmark contribution is the first prospective, single-blind, randomised controlled trial investigating indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence-guided inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND), published in 2023. This work demonstrated that ICG guidance significantly enhances the safety and efficacy of ILND by improving lymph node detection and reducing complications—a critical advance given the morbidity of traditional groin dissections. With 7 citations already, this trial has rapidly become a cornerstone reference for fluorescence-guided surgery in urologic oncology. Xiong’s research addresses a pressing need for precision in managing penile cancer, where nodal status dictates prognosis and treatment. By rigorously evaluating an innovative imaging modality, he has provided high-level evidence that can reshape surgical standards. His work exemplifies the translation of bioimaging technology into tangible patient benefits, offering a less invasive yet more accurate approach to a challenging procedure. For students and researchers, Xiong’s study is a model of how well-designed clinical trials can drive surgical innovation in rare cancers.
