About

Ulrich Reiser is a pioneering robotics researcher whose career has been defined by his sustained contributions to service robotics and assistive technology, with a particular focus on developing robotic systems capable of supporting elderly and vulnerable people in domestic environments. Based at Fraunhofer IPA, Reiser has been a central force behind the celebrated Care-O-bot platform — one of the most recognized mobile service robot families in the world. His work spans the full arc of robot development, integrating hardware engineering, motion planning, human-robot interaction, and industrial design into cohesive, user-centered systems. His 2009 papers introducing Care-O-bot 3 attracted over 190 and 113 citations respectively, establishing the platform as a benchmark for household service robots. The 2015 introduction of Care-O-bot 4, framed innovatively as a "Gentleman Robot," demonstrated Reiser's commitment to blending emotional design with technical capability. His contributions to the pan-European ACCOMPANY project further reflect his engagement with real-world aging challenges and multidisciplinary collaboration. Across his body of work, Reiser has helped shape how researchers and engineers conceive of robots not merely as machines, but as acceptable, trustworthy companions in everyday human life.
