About
Ulla Wandinger is a pioneering atmospheric scientist whose research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of aerosols through innovative lidar techniques. Her work centers on aerosol characterization, particularly the optical properties of dust, smoke, and volcanic ash, using Raman and polarization lidar systems. Wandinger’s seminal 2007 study, with 697 citations, provided the first comprehensive statistics on aerosol-type-dependent lidar ratios, a critical parameter for remote sensing. She led the development of the Lidar-Radiometer Inversion Code (LIRIC), enabling the retrieval of vertical aerosol profiles from combined lidar and sun photometer data—a tool now widely used across the EARLINET network. Her contributions to volcanic ash research were pivotal during the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, where she developed methods to separate ash and fine-mode particle mass profiles (233 citations).
