Matthias Tesche is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research sits at the intersection of aerosol remote sensing, lidar technology, and the characterization of mineral dust and biomass burning particles. Over nearly two decades, he has made foundational contributions to our understanding of how aerosols are identified, separated, and quantified in the atmosphere using sophisticated ground-based and airborne instrumentation. Tesche's most celebrated work includes a landmark 2007 study on aerosol-type-dependent lidar ratios, synthesizing a decade of Raman lidar observations across Europe, Asia, and Africa — now cited nearly 700 times. His 2009 paper on vertically resolving mixed dust and smoke plumes over Cape Verde using polarization lidar techniques has garnered over 550 citations and remains a methodological touchstone in the field.
