Shibin Zhu is a urologic surgeon and researcher whose work focuses on advancing minimally invasive prostate cancer surgery, particularly through robotic-assisted techniques. His major contributions center on identifying and managing rare but serious complications associated with novel surgical approaches. In a 2021 study, Zhu systematically characterized ligating clip migration after robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP), documenting this troublesome complication that can lead to calculus formation and anastomotic stricture. This work provides crucial guidance for surgeons performing high-volume RARP procedures. More recently, Zhu reported the first known case of acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to carbon dioxide gas embolism following single-port robotic-assisted perineal radical prostatectomy (spRAPP). This case report highlights a life-threatening complication of an emerging technique especially indicated for patients with prior abdominal surgery.
