About
Reika Katsumata is a rising leader in polymer science, whose work bridges fundamental macromolecular design and advanced functional materials. Her research centers on the mechanics and surface engineering of soft matter, with key contributions in bottlebrush polymers, microfibers, and stimuli-responsive adhesives. Katsumata introduced a “dangling defect-driven design” for wet/dry bottlebrush pressure sensitive adhesives, enabling robust performance in both hydrated and dry environments—a breakthrough with direct implications for soft robotics, wearable electronics, and dielectric actuators. She has also pioneered the reversible self-coiling of microfibers via elastocapillarity, achieving nature-inspired, tunable coiling in synthetic systems for the first time. This work opens new avenues for responsive mechanical reinforcement and protective microstructures. Additionally, Katsumata co-authored the celebratory special issue “Next Generation of Polymer Researchers” in *Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics*, honoring the 80-year legacy of Hermann Staudinger.
