Patriya Wiesmann is a human-centered researcher at the intersection of social robotics, adolescent well-being, and inclusive education. Her work explores how socially assistive robots can serve as tools for connection and support among vulnerable populations. In a landmark co-design study with adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wiesmann demonstrated how social robots could mitigate loneliness and provide safe social interaction for youth isolated at home—a contribution that has garnered 12 citations and shaped conversations around technology’s role in mental health. She also broke new ground by engaging English Language Learners (ELLs) as cultural informants in the design of educational social robots, addressing a critical gap in a system where only 2% of educators are trained to support 4.9 million ELL students in the U.S. This work, with 9 citations, highlights her commitment to participatory design and equity.
