Nilton E. Rosário is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the characterization and modeling of aerosol optical properties, with a particular emphasis on biomass burning emissions in South America. His work bridges ground-based observations and satellite remote sensing to improve our understanding of regional aerosol dynamics. In a highly cited 2009 study (71 citations), Rosário assessed the regional representativity of AERONET sites during the biomass burning season by correlating ground-based Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) measurements with MODIS satellite data, providing critical validation for satellite retrievals over the continent. He further advanced the field through modeling efforts, notably using the CCATT-BRAMS model to simulate the intra-seasonal variability of smoke AOD and its perturbation of surface shortwave radiation, a key contribution to understanding the climatic effects of biomass burning. Rosário has also made significant methodological contributions, including the calibration of multifilter rotating shadowband radiometers (MFRSR) for spectral AOD retrievals in both polluted urban environments like São Paulo and pristine conditions in the central Amazon.
