Michael Varga has pioneered the field of mobile optical communications, fundamentally challenging the long-held assumption that directional light-based links are impractical for long-range, mobile applications. His seminal 2010 paper, "Challenge" (116 citations), identified the core bottleneck: the need for costly mechanical steering to maintain a connection. Rather than accepting this limitation, Varga's research demonstrated how advances in CCD and CMOS imaging sensors could replace physical steering, effectively turning a camera into a receiver that captures light from any direction.
