Marc R. Wilkins is a pioneering figure in the field of proteomics, best known for coining the term "proteome" and laying the foundational frameworks for large-scale protein analysis. His key research areas include proteome mapping, protein identification technologies, and the systems biology of minimal organisms. Wilkins made a landmark contribution with his 1995 study on *Mycoplasma genitalium*, the smallest known self-replicating organism, where he produced the first comprehensive protein map of a minimal cell.
