Ed Penny is a leading figure in astronomical instrumentation and Galactic Archaeology, whose work has been pivotal in unraveling the Milky Way’s formation history. As the principal architect behind the High Efficiency and Resolution Multi-Element Spectrograph (HERMES) at the Anglo-Australian Telescope, Penny spearheaded the design, integration, and first-light commissioning of this facility-class optical spectrograph.
