Jean-Pierre Changeux is a towering figure in modern neuroscience, best known for his pioneering work on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and the fundamental principles of synaptic transmission. His landmark contributions include the identification and purification of the acetylcholine receptor, the first neurotransmitter receptor ever isolated, and the formulation of the allosteric model of receptor function. This work revolutionized our understanding of how drugs and neurotransmitters modulate brain activity at the molecular level. Changeux is also celebrated for his influential theory of "epigenesis by selective stabilization of synapses," which posits that brain development and learning involve the selective strengthening or elimination of synaptic connections based on experience.
