About
Jayne Matthews is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose research has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of robotic prostate cancer surgery. Her work centers on two critical areas: defining the true learning curve for robotic radical prostatectomy and proving that superior patient outcomes are achievable with robotic techniques. Matthews’ landmark prospective single-surgeon study of 1,552 consecutive cases (176 citations) demonstrated that robotic surgery yields better quality of life and improved surgical margins, but only after a long learning curve. Her earlier, equally influential work (104 citations) directly addressed the question of whether experienced open surgeons should convert to robotics, providing crucial data on the transition period. Matthews further validated these findings in an updated analysis of 2,206 cases (75 citations), confirming superior biochemical recurrence rates and long-term quality-of-life outcomes. More recently, she has ventured into immunotherapy, leading the IRE-IMMUNO study (13 citations) which showed that irreversible electroporation of localized prostate cancer can downregulate immune suppression and induce systemic anti-tumor T-cell activation.
