Jan Frederik Maas is a pioneering researcher in human-robot interaction (HRI), with a central focus on developing socially intelligent robotic systems capable of natural, multi-modal communication. His key research areas include topic tracking, dialogue management, and the creation of robust interaction frameworks for service robots operating in real-world household environments. Maas’s most significant contribution is the development of the BIRON (Bielefeld Robot Companion) system, which introduced a novel multi-modal topic tracker that enables robots to maintain coherent conversations with naive users by following shifts in dialogue topics.
