Gerhard Rinkenauer is a leading researcher in human-robot collaboration, with a focus on the social and cognitive factors that shape safe and effective interactions in industrial settings. His work lies at the intersection of engineering psychology and human factors, exploring how robots’ physical motion, emotional expression, and spatial behavior influence human trust, comfort, and performance. A key contribution is his application of proxemics and approach-avoidance tendencies to understand and predict worker distance behavior, demonstrating that a robot’s height, velocity, and even a “smile” can significantly affect collaboration quality. Rinkenauer has also advanced the science of robotic teleoperation, using Fitts’ law and two-timescale learning models to systematically analyze how operators master bimanual control of complex robotic arms.
