About
Dimitri Diakopoulos is a pioneering figure at the intersection of musical robotics, networked performance, and human-computer interaction. His research fundamentally reimagines how humans and machines collaborate in live musical settings, most notably through his central role in developing the Machine Orchestra—an innovative ensemble that seamlessly blends human laptop performers with robotic musical instruments. This landmark project, detailed in his most-cited work (51 citations), established a new paradigm for shared, social instruments in networked music. Diakopoulos’s major technical contribution is the HIDUINO project (18 citations), an open-source firmware suite that transformed the Arduino microcontroller into a driverless USB-MIDI device. By solving the critical challenge of reliable, plug-and-play communication between custom interfaces and computers, HIDUINO empowered a generation of NIME designers and educators. He also co-developed the KarmetiK NotomotoN (17 citations), a portable, highly expressive musical robot designed for both performance and teaching. Through these contributions, Diakopoulos has provided the foundational tools and conceptual frameworks that enable artists and engineers to build responsive, robotic musical systems, making him a key architect of the modern musical robotics landscape.
