About

Driven by a passion for unveiling hidden worlds, C. Liebig is a leading figure in the field of gravitational microlensing, a powerful technique for detecting exoplanets and stellar remnants that are otherwise invisible. Liebig’s primary research focuses on developing and implementing fully deterministic observing strategies to maximize the statistical yield of microlensing surveys, a critical step toward understanding the demographics of planetary systems across the galaxy. Their landmark 2010 paper, “Realisation of a fully‐deterministic microlensing observing strategy for inferring planet populations,” has garnered 88 citations for providing a robust framework for population-level inferences. Liebig also made significant contributions to real-time detection, most notably through the ARTEMiS system, which enabled the first automated identification of a weak microlensing anomaly in the event OGLE-2008-BLG-510 (2012, 25 citations). This work demonstrated the power of autonomous pipelines for capturing rare, subtle signals—such as those from brown dwarfs or stellar binaries—without human intervention. By bridging theoretical strategy with practical, real-time observation, Liebig has helped transform microlensing from a niche technique into a cornerstone of exoplanet science, paving the way for future large-scale surveys.
