About

Barbara Previtali is a leading figure in laser-based advanced manufacturing, whose work bridges the critical gap between fundamental process understanding and industrial-scale robotic automation. Her research primarily focuses on laser metal deposition (LMD) for additive manufacturing and high-precision laser welding, with a strong emphasis on real-time process monitoring and control. Previtali’s most impactful contribution is the development of coaxial laser triangulation for in-situ height monitoring during LMD, a breakthrough detailed in her highly cited 2018 paper (115 citations) that solves the problem of geometrical inaccuracies and potential collisions in additive processes. She has further advanced the field by exploring surface finishing via laser re-melting and comparing the capabilities of articulated robots versus CNC gantries for fabricating large aerospace and oil & gas components. Demonstrating the versatility of her expertise, her recent work (2024) tackles the critical challenge of seam tracking and gap bridging in robotic laser welding, as well as the innovative application of robotic laser systems for dismantling battery packs to support a circular economy. Through her integration of sensing, control, and robotics, Previtali is shaping the future of smart, flexible, and sustainable laser manufacturing.
