About

Alberto Redaelli’s research bridges the elegant physics of fluid dynamics with the cutting-edge demands of robotic surgery. His early foundational work on the shape of aquatic animals revealed how streamlined bodies achieve exceptional swimming efficiency by maintaining attached, laminar flow at high Reynolds numbers—insights that have informed bio-inspired design. More recently, Redaelli has pioneered the integration of augmented reality (AR) with human–robot collaboration for percutaneous nephrolithotomy, a system that guides surgeons in defining incision points and aligning needles to preplanned paths. He has also developed an AR-assisted robot learning framework for minimally invasive surgery, leveraging Gaussian Mixture Models to learn from human demonstrations. His 2025 work introduces a human-inspired compliant and passive shared control framework for teleoperated contact-rich tasks, enabling robots to continuously regulate impedance like a human operator. With over 100 citations across his most influential papers, Redaelli’s contributions are shaping the future of medical robotics—making complex procedures safer, more intuitive, and more precise.
