About

Harbin Engineering University (HEU) has established itself as a powerhouse in robotics, autonomous systems, and marine technology, with research strengths that span from the deepest ocean trenches to the frontiers of artificial intelligence. Located in China's northeast, HEU has cultivated a distinctly interdisciplinary identity, fusing advanced control theory, computer vision, and bio-inspired engineering to tackle some of the most demanding technological challenges of our era. The university's most celebrated contributions lie in underwater and marine robotics. Pioneering work on bioinspired soft robots for deep-sea exploration has reimagined how humanity can study the ocean's extreme environments, moving beyond rigid metallic vessels toward adaptive, pressure-tolerant designs inspired by deep-sea organisms. Complementing this, HEU researchers have made significant advances in underwater image processing, autonomous perception, and target grasping — collectively cited hundreds of times and shaping the global field of marine autonomy. HEU's AI and machine learning contributions are equally impressive. Researchers have advanced spatio-temporal graph neural networks for pedestrian trajectory prediction, optical flow estimation, and semantic SLAM for dynamic environments — foundational tools for autonomous navigation. Their reinforcement learning survey and neural network-based robot control frameworks, including predefined-time nonsingular terminal sliding-mode approaches, reflect deep expertise in intelligent, adaptive systems. The university also distinguishes itself in medical robotics, having developed early robotic catheter systems with force-and-visual feedback for vascular surgery, and pioneering robotic adherent cell injection for biomedical research. Coupled with strengths in EMG-controlled prosthetics and offshore wind turbine maintenance, HEU offers prospective students and collaborators a uniquely broad yet cohesive research environment where ocean engineering, intelligent robotics, and applied AI converge with real-world consequence.
