A stroboscope is a device that produces brief, rapid flashes of light at controlled intervals, effectively allowing high-speed or cyclically moving objects to appear frozen or slowed when observed or captured by a camera. In robotics and machine vision, stroboscopic illumination is used to eliminate unwanted specular reflections from surfaces lit by continuous (DC) illumination — by synchronizing short light pulses with a camera's exposure, the system can isolate diffuse reflection components and suppress glare, improving surface inspection and visual perception accuracy. In medical robotics, stroboscopes are employed in laryngeal surgery and vocal fold assessment, where synchronized flashing light enables surgeons and diagnostic systems to visualize the rapid vibratory motion of vocal cords in apparent slow motion. This capability matters because it enhances both surgical precision and machine vision robustness: cleaner optical data leads to more reliable perception pipelines, while in surgical contexts it supports safer, more accurate manipulation of delicate tissue structures.
