A radioactive tracer is a radiopharmaceutical compound that emits detectable radiation signals, allowing clinicians and robotic systems to identify and navigate to specific biological targets within the body. In surgical robotics and AI-assisted procedures, radioactive tracers are injected into tissue prior to or during an operation, where they accumulate in structures of interest — such as sentinel lymph nodes in cancer staging — emitting gamma rays or beta particles that specialized probes can detect in real time. Robot-mounted or handheld radiation detectors, such as DROP-IN beta probes, sense these emissions to guide precise tissue removal or biopsy, often complemented by hybrid tracers like ICG-(99m)Tc-nanocolloid that combine radioactive and fluorescent signals for both preoperative imaging (PET/CT) and intraoperative visualization. This technology matters because it enables minimally invasive robotic surgery to achieve highly accurate, tissue-sparing interventions — improving cancer staging accuracy, reducing unnecessary dissection, and ultimately enhancing patient outcomes through data-driven, radiation-guided navigation.
