Oncology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancer — the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells across diverse tissue types including prostate, renal, endometrial, bladder, lung, and head and neck cancers. In robotics and AI, oncology serves as a primary application domain where surgical robots, computer-assisted systems, and machine learning algorithms are deployed to improve patient outcomes. Robotic platforms such as the da Vinci system enable minimally invasive procedures — including radical prostatectomy, lobectomy, hysterectomy, and transoral robotic surgery — offering surgeons enhanced dexterity, visualization, and precision compared to open or conventional laparoscopic approaches. AI supports oncology through tumor detection, pathological staging, treatment planning, and predicting biochemical recurrence. The field matters because cancer remains a leading global cause of mortality, and robotic-assisted oncologic surgery has demonstrated comparable or superior outcomes in cancer control, reduced complications, and faster recovery. Understanding oncological clinical guidelines and outcome metrics is essential for designing, validating, and deploying robotic and AI systems in real surgical environments.
