About
A computer network is a system of interconnected devices that communicate and share data through wired or wireless links using standardized protocols. In robotics and AI, networks form the communication backbone that enables robots, sensors, and computing infrastructure to exchange information in real time. Multi-robot systems rely on networks to coordinate formation control, distribute task assignments through auction mechanisms, and share sensor data for collective decision-making. Wireless standards such as 5G and IoT protocols allow low-latency communication between robots and cloud infrastructure, enabling cloud robotics architectures where computationally expensive processing is offloaded to remote servers. Underwater sensor networks extend these principles to challenging environments like offshore oilfields and marine monitoring. Federated learning frameworks exploit distributed networks to train AI models across edge devices without centralizing raw data. Networks also support vehicle-to-vehicle communication for autonomous transportation safety. As robotic systems become more distributed and collaborative, robust, low-latency networking is fundamental to achieving reliable coordination, situational awareness, and scalable intelligence across heterogeneous robot teams.
