About

Cloud computing refers to the delivery of on-demand computational resources — including processing power, storage, and software services — over the internet, rather than relying solely on local hardware. In robotics and AI, cloud computing enables resource-constrained robots to offload intensive tasks such as perception, motion planning, and machine learning to remote servers with far greater capacity. This paradigm, often called cloud robotics, allows individual robots to share learned knowledge, access large databases of 3D object models for grasp planning, and execute computationally expensive algorithms that would otherwise be impractical onboard. Frameworks like DAvinCi demonstrate how cloud infrastructure can provide scalability and parallelism for service robots operating in complex environments. Beyond individual robots, cloud computing underpins broader ecosystems including Industry 4.0 manufacturing, IoT-enabled smart agriculture, and federated learning deployments across distributed devices. Its importance lies in democratizing advanced capabilities — even hardware-limited platforms can leverage state-of-the-art AI — while enabling continuous knowledge sharing across robot fleets, accelerating collective learning and making sophisticated autonomous systems more practical and cost-effective to deploy at scale.
