About
Xintao Li is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose research has fundamentally advanced the surgical management of complex renal and adrenal tumors, particularly through the application of robotic technology. His primary contributions lie in refining robotic-assisted inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombectomy, a high-stakes procedure for renal cell carcinoma with tumor thrombus. In his landmark 2015 work (135 citations), Li established that surgical techniques must be tailored to the side of the thrombus, providing the first systematic guidance for this challenging approach. He further validated the superiority of the robotic platform over open surgery in a matched comparative analysis (69 citations), demonstrating improved perioperative outcomes. Li also defined critical anatomical landmarks, such as the first and second porta hepatis, to guide safe retrohepatic IVC thrombectomy (61 citations). Beyond vascular oncology, his propensity-score analysis of partial nephrectomy (31 citations) showed that robot-assisted techniques offer advantages over laparoscopy for tumors larger than 4 cm. Most recently, Li has embraced artificial intelligence, developing machine learning models to predict intraoperative hemodynamic instability in pheochromocytoma patients.
