About

Xiaolong Xie is a pioneering pediatric surgeon whose research has significantly advanced the application of robotic and minimally invasive surgery for choledochal cysts in children. Working at the forefront of surgical innovation, Xie has dedicated his career to evaluating and refining robot-assisted procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System as an alternative to traditional open and laparoscopic approaches in pediatric patients. His most influential work, a 2020 retrospective comparison of open, laparoscopic, and robotic choledochal cyst excisions (69 citations), established critical benchmarks for the field. Complementing this, his studies on learning curves and early clinical experiences helped define the technical and institutional requirements for safely adopting robotic surgery in children — including infants under one year of age, a particularly challenging demographic. His 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis further consolidated evidence comparing laparoscopic and robotic outcomes across institutions. With a cumulative body of work exceeding 175 citations, Xie has made substantial contributions to understanding surgical safety, operative efficiency, and parental decision-making in pediatric abdominal surgery. His research provides essential guidance for surgical teams worldwide seeking to implement robotic techniques in complex pediatric biliary procedures.
