About
Phil Rosenberg is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the interactions between mineral dust, boundary layer dynamics, and climate processes, particularly in the world’s most extreme desert environments. His major contributions include advancing the understanding of how Saharan dust influences the atmospheric boundary layer—a critical but poorly understood component of the Earth system. As a key participant in the Fennec climate programme, Rosenberg helped design and execute groundbreaking airborne campaigns over the remote Sahara in 2011 and 2012, collecting unique observations from Mauritania and Mali. His highly cited 2015 paper, “Advances in understanding mineral dust and boundary layer processes over the Sahara from Fennec aircraft observations” (85 citations), synthesizes these findings and has become a foundational reference for desert climate research. This work has significantly improved the representation of dust–boundary layer feedbacks in climate models. Rosenberg’s research is widely recognized for its innovative use of aircraft-based measurements to tackle fundamental questions in aerosol–climate science, making him a key figure in the field of atmospheric physics and desert meteorology.
