About
P. Balanutsa is a pioneering observational astrophysicist whose work centers on the rapid optical follow-up of gravitational-wave sources, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and high-energy neutrino events using the MASTER Global Robotic Net. As a key member of the MASTER collaboration, Balanutsa played a critical role in the first optical detection of the LIGO/Virgo neutron star merger GW170817 (227 citations), capturing the earliest image of its host galaxy, NGC 4993, and providing essential data for multi-messenger astronomy. Their contributions also include the first optical observations of the gravitational-wave event GW150914 (46 citations) and the discovery of a luminous red nova in M31 (43 citations). Balanutsa has been instrumental in developing the MASTER network’s equipment, algorithms, and sky survey strategies, enabling a unique fast all-sky survey down to magnitude 19–20. With over 800 total citations across their most cited works, Balanutsa’s research has advanced the study of dark energy, prompt optical GRB emissions, and the polarization of early optical afterglows, establishing them as a leader in robotic telescope networks and time-domain astrophysics.
