About
Frank L. Palmer is a leading head and neck surgical oncologist whose work has shaped the management of squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and oropharynx. His research centers on refining surgical approaches and identifying prognostic factors to improve outcomes for patients with tumors of the base of tongue and soft palate. Palmer’s landmark study on early T1/T2 base of tongue cancer demonstrated that conventional surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy achieves excellent locoregional control, challenging the prevailing preference for primary chemoradiation. This work, cited over 20 times, helped lay the groundwork for the modern shift toward minimally invasive surgical paradigms. In a separate seminal analysis of 186 soft palate carcinoma patients, Palmer identified key predictors of survival, including margin status and nodal involvement, providing a critical evidence base for treatment planning. His contributions have directly informed clinical guidelines and surgical decision-making, with his most-cited papers accumulating more than 40 citations. Palmer’s legacy lies in his meticulous, outcomes-driven research that continues to guide surgeons in balancing oncologic efficacy with functional preservation.
