About
Foad Vashahi is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of soft materials science and neural engineering, whose work is reshaping how we design adaptive interfaces for both biomedical devices and the brain. His primary research areas include the mechanics of polymer gels and the development of stable, high-resolution brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Vashahi’s major contribution lies in engineering mechanically diverse gels that maintain equal solvent content, solving the critical problem of volume fluctuations and shape distortions in multi-gel systems used in soft robotics and tissue engineering. His 2022 paper on this topic has garnered 21 citations, reflecting its foundational impact on the field. More recently, Vashahi has advanced the clinical translation of the Fleuron™ probe—an ultrasoft, high-density neural interface designed for stable, bidirectional communication with the brain. This work, published in 2025, addresses the instability of rigid materials in neural tissue, paving the way for large-scale functional neural datasets essential for building brain foundation models. By bridging material science and neurotechnology, Vashahi is enabling a future where soft, reliable implants can decode and interact with the brain’s complex dynamics.
