About

Eben Alsberg is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of advanced manufacturing, smart materials, and tissue engineering. His work centers on developing programmable, dynamic biomaterials—particularly hydrogels—that can mimic the complex, evolving environments of living tissues. A major contribution is his leadership in the emerging field of 4D printing, where he has demonstrated how additive manufacturing can be combined with stimuli-responsive materials to create objects that change shape or function over time. His highly cited 2025 comprehensive review on 4D printing (118 citations) has become a foundational resource for the field. In a landmark 2021 study (79 citations), Alsberg achieved a significant breakthrough by engineering cell-laden, multilayer hydrogel actuators capable of multiple-step and reversible shape morphing under biologically compatible conditions. This work overcomes a critical barrier, moving shape-morphing hydrogels from abiotic robotics into the realm of dynamic tissue morphogenesis. With over 100 publications and a growing citation impact, Alsberg’s research is shaping the future of regenerative medicine, soft robotics, and smart biomedical devices.
