About

Daniel Carrizo is a leading astrobiologist whose work bridges the gap between Earth’s most extreme environments and the search for life on Mars. His research focuses on microbial ecology in iron-sulfur rich and hyperarid analogs, with a particular emphasis on lipid biomarker detection and life detection instrumentation. In his highly cited 2020 study, Carrizo simulated a Mars drilling mission in the Río Tinto river system, demonstrating how sulfate and iron oxide deposits can preserve complex microbial biomarkers—a critical ground-truthing effort for future Mars exploration.
